WHAT IS THE ECONOMICS OLYMPIAD?

Very few education systems recognize the powerful and lifelong impact that early education in economics and finance can have on everyone’s daily life. The Economics Olympiad is the brainchild of the Institute of Economic Education (INEV) of the Czech Republic. Its goal is to inspire interest in economic learning among teenagers. Today, the Economics Olympiad is held in more than 30 countries. In 2023, the Liberal Alternative Institute in cooperation with the Economic Foundations Initiative (EFI) is pleased to bring this competition to North Macedonia, which is one of the countries where this competition will be held.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Rounds

i.School round

It is open to all students, regardless of whether they have economic knowledge or not! Students undergo an online test. The best students advance to the next round. Each registered high school will organize school-level testing in accordance with the EO rules. In cases where schools do not have the technological capacity to organize school testing. The testing will be controlled by the school coordinator to ensure fair testing.

Testing method: Testing at this level will follow the EO guidelines and will use prepared test questions. The testing is conducted online via the official platform of IEO.

Dates of school round: 23-28 Feb 2023.

Results of the School Round of the Economics Olympiad 2023

The school round within the framework of the Economics Olympiad in the Republic of North Macedonia has been successfully completed. Testing in this round lasted from 23 to 28 February 2023. 27 schools from the country participated in the school round, where a total of 900 students underwent testing.

ii. Regional round

The testing is conducted in person. The regional level is organized in 7 regional points. The regional testing will be organized in cooperation with the universities of the respective regions.

Testing method: a written test based on the literature provided will be administered at the regional/municipal level, with an essay question related to the topic of the seminar.

Deadlines: 06 May 2023

iii. National Round

A one-day event for the best contestants in the country. A total of 50 top students participate in the national level of the EO in North Macedonia. The national level testing will be organized at one of the partner universities. The national level testing is organized as a full-day event with panel discussions between the two testing phases. In addition to the EO participants, all participating schools, university students and others will be able to register to participate in the event. Five (5) winners of the EO in North Macedonia will be announced at a closing ceremony.

Testing method: a written test from the materials provided will be administered to all participating students. The top 10 students will undergo an oral exam with a jury of 4 university economics professors.

Deadlines: 24 June 2023

iv. International Economics Olympiad

The top five (5) students from each country represent their country in the international competition! The Olympiad is held over a period of 2-4 days. Competitors have the opportunity to make new friends, visit a new country, and listen to and learn from prestigious guest speakers.
