ABOUT US

The Liberal Alternative Institute (LAI) is a civil society organization dedicated to driving social change through liberal activism, innovation, and inclusive dialogue. Established in 2012 in Tetovo, North Macedonia, LAI emerged as a response to the growing need for an alternative voice—one rooted in the principles of democracy, good governance, and social justice. Our approach is shaped by the international experience of our founding members, who blend Western liberal thought with local values and traditions to create impactful solutions to societal challenges.

At LAI, we believe that social progress is achieved through the interplay of knowledge, participation, and action. Our work is driven by a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, which brings together diverse fields of knowledge to address complex issues, and multi-perceptivity, which ensures transparency, impartiality, and inclusiveness in every initiative we undertake.

Our Vision

Our vision is a society where every individual is empowered to contribute to a just, democratic, and inclusive community. We aspire to be a leading force in promoting liberal values in North Macedonia and the Balkans—a hub for innovative ideas, meaningful dialogue, and collective action. Through our work, we envision a future where civic engagement, human rights, and equal opportunities form the foundation of a thriving and open society.

What We Do

LAI’s projects and programs aim to empower individuals, foster community development, and advocate for systemic change. We currently focus on four key programs, each designed to address specific societal challenges while promoting our core values of equity, inclusion, and civic engagement:

Human Rights & Freedoms:

We advocate for dignity, equality, and justice through educational campaigns, capacity-building workshops, and policy advocacy. Our initiatives combat hate speech, defend underrepresented voices, and promote human rights awareness.

Youth & Social Inclusion:

We work to reduce barriers to opportunity and promote active citizenship among youth and marginalized groups. Our projects promote social cohesion and empower young people to lead inclusive community initiatives.

Employability & Entrepreneurship

We provide young people with the skills and knowledge necessary for career success and self-employment. Our programs foster entrepreneurial thinking, develop digital competencies, and promote social entrepreneurship.

Economic Literacy Program:

We promote financial and economic literacy, equipping young individuals with essential knowledge for making informed decisions, managing resources effectively, and participating actively in the economic life of their communities.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Liberal Alternative Institute is to inspire and equip citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to engage actively in society and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Through a variety of innovative project programs, we aim to foster creativity, critical thinking, and civic responsibility, preparing citizens to navigate and shape an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

Our mission is deeply rooted in the principles of liberal democracy and guided by values that shape our organizational ethos:

Community:

We recognize our shared responsibility to contribute to both local and global communities. As professionals, researchers, and engaged citizens, we work to enhance the well-being of the places where we live, fostering civic engagement and social cohesion.

Diversity and Inclusiveness

We promote a culture of inclusion that transcends labels and stereotypes, encouraging dialogue and mutual understanding. We believe that a diversity of perspectives, experiences, and traditions is essential for ethical and empathetic global citizenship.

Innovation and Creativity

We embrace innovation and creativity as catalysts for change. Whether through pioneering projects or experimental methodologies, we push boundaries and challenge conventional approaches to social issues. Our NGO stands at the forefront of promoting liberal thought and progressive solutions in local and regional communities.
