The Economic Olympiad, also known as the International Economic Olympiad, was established in 2016 by the Institute for Economic Education (INEV) and its founder – Martina Bacik. It quickly emerged as one of the most prestigious high school competitions in the Czech Republic. Expanding rapidly, it now engages around 80,000 students globally, transcending its national roots to embrace an international audience. Adapted for students aged 14 to 20, with no restrictions on the type of secondary education, the Economic Olympiad receives support both nationally and internationally from esteemed entities such as Ministries of Education, central banks, academic institutions and prestigious sponsors.
Within the Republic of North Macedonia, the Economic Olympiad is being organized for the first time in 2023 by the Liberal Alternative Institute, with the support of the Economic Fundamentals Initiative from the USA.
Open to all students, regardless of whether they have economic knowledge or not! Students take an online test. The best students advance to the next round. Each registered high school will organize school-level testing in accordance with the EO rules. In cases where schools do not have the technological capacity to organize school-level testing. The testing will be supervised by the school coordinator to ensure fair testing.
Context
There are a total of 128 high schools in North Macedonia, of which 11 are private high schools.
ii. Regional Round
The regional level will be organized in 7 regional/municipal points. Regional/municipal testing is organized in cooperation with the universities of the respective regions. A seminar on economic education based on the chapters of Common Sense Economics is organized for the participants, while a presentation on the topic of Common Sense Economics will be organized with the teachers.
iii. National Round
A one-day event for the best runners in the country. A total of 50 best students will participate in the national level of the EO in North Macedonia (10 students from each regional level are tested, depending on availability). The national level testing will be organized at one of the partner universities. The national testing will be organized as a full-day event with panel discussions between the two testing phases. In addition to the EO participants, all participating schools, students and others will be able to apply to participate in the event. The five (5) winners of the OE in North Macedonia will be announced at the closing ceremony.
iv. International Economic Olympiad
The top five (5) students from each country will participate in the 2025 international competition! The Olympiad is held over a period of 2-4 days. Competitors have the opportunity to make new friends, visit a new place, and listen to and learn from prestigious guest speakers..
